Northwestern won first Big Ten Championship since 2006 last season
EVANSTON, Ill. (September 6, 2024) – Fresh off a season in which it captured its first Big Ten Conference title since 2006, the Northwestern University men's golf team will raise the curtain on its 2024-25 slate this weekend at the Sahalee Players Championship in Sammamish, Wash.
Action at Sahalee Country Club, which features a par-72 course with a 7,007-yard layout, will get underway on Saturday with first and second-round play at 9 a.m. (CT). Sunday's final round is also scheduled to begin with tee times from 9 a.m. (CT).
Northwestern is set to feature as part of a field that includes five NCAA Championship Finals qualifiers from a season ago. That quintet includes Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M. Event host Washington, Arizona State, Duke, Oregon, Pepperdine, TCU, and UNLV round out the 13-team field.
Reigning Big Ten Conference Head Coach of the Year David Inglis' lineup for the event is set to include Ethan Tseng, Akshay Anand, Niall Shiels-Donegan, Daniel Svärd, and Aidan Kramer. First-year Mark Gazi will compete as an individual.
Both Svärd and Tseng enjoyed terrific 2023-24 seasons, both earning First Team All-Big Ten Conference distinction. Svärd became the program's third two-time individual Big Ten Champion in program history, firing a one-over 211 (68-75-68) at the Big Ten Championships. Tseng fired 16 rounds at par of better last season, none more impressive than a final-round eight-under-par 62, matching Jess Daley's 18-hole program record, en route to victory at the Fighting Irish Classic.
Shiels-Donegan posted top-25 finishes in two of his last three outings, highlighted by a 19th-place showing at the Big Ten Championships, while Anand compiled three top-25 showings of his own throughout the season.
Both Kramer and Gazi will mark their respective Northwestern debuts this weekend. A graduate transfer from Georgia Tech, Kramer appeared in 26 rounds during his time as a Yellow Jacket, turning in 18 rounds at par or better. The lone first-year on the Wildcat roster, Gazi is coming off a two-year stint on the Ireland U18 Team and represented his country at the 2023 European Boys Championships in Switzerland.
After returning from the Pacific Northwest, Northwestern will be in action closer to home when it competes at the Fighting Illini Invitational, September 20-22, in Olympia Fields, Ill.
