‘Cats put trio inside top 15 to close regular season
URBANA, Ill. (April 21, 2024) – Daniel Svärd placed fifth overall, leading a group of three Wildcats in the top 15, as the Northwestern University men's golf team closed out the regular season portion of its 2023-24 schedule this weekend at the Fighting Illini Spring Collegiate in Urbana, Ill.
The 'Cats put up a 54-hole team score of 883 (297-289-297) to finish fourth overall in the team race. Host Illinois (281-291-292=864) won the team championship at the event, while the Fighting Illini's Ryan Voois (64-76-72=212) was the individual medalist.
Svärd led the attack for Northwestern at the Atkins Golf Club (par 71; 7,503 yards), posting a three-over-par 216 (76-69-71) en route to his third top-five finish of 2023-24. The Jarfalla, Sweden native fired the top individual round by a Wildcat during Saturday's second round, carding a two-under-par 69, his team-best 10th round in the 60s this season. Svärd capped off play with a final-round even-par 71 on Sunday.
Cameron Adam and James Imai battled to secure top-15 finishes. Adam used back-to-back one-over-par rounds of 72 on Saturday to ultimately secure 12th with a 220 (72-72-76), while Imai opened the event with an even-par 71 on the way to a 221 (71-75-75) that saw him take 15th.
Ethan Tseng finished 36th with a 227 (78-73-76) that featured a second-round two-over-par 73. Chris Zhang rounded out the Wildcat starting five, totaling a 233 (79-79-75) to come in 50th.
Niall Shiels-Donegan led a group of three 'Cats competing as individuals at the event, picking up his second top-25 finish as he took 22nd with a 223 (75-72-76). Jeremy Chen (T-57th; 79-77-79=235) and Akshay Anand (T-64th; 80-82-78=240) also saw action for Northwestern.
