Northwestern Wins Big Ten Championship, Svärd Claims Individual Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 28, 2024) – Behind four top 10 finishers, the Northwestern Men's Golf Team won its first Big Ten Conference Championship since 2006 in wire-to-wire fashion on Sunday afternoon at Scioto Country Club (Par 70, 7240 Yards) in Columbus. Sophomore Daniel Svärd won the individual championship for the second straight year, posting a one-over-par performance.
Svärd (68-75-68=211), who shot two-under-par in both the first and final rounds, became just Northwestern's third two-time individual champion in program history, joining Luke Donald (2000-01 and Sid Richardson (1937-38). He was named to the All-Championship Team, along with graduate student James Imai, who shot five-over-par and finished tied for third (68-74-73=215).

Battling windy conditions all weekend, the Wildcats posted the event's best scores in each round (280-294-289=863), finishing 23-over-par. Northwestern blew past second-place Illinois (290-296-292=878), which was 38-over-par and saw its streak of eight consecutive championships snapped.
Sophomore Ethan Tseng (T-8th: 71-74-74=219) and junior Cameron Adam (10th: 73-71-76=220) rounded out Northwestern's top 10 finishers. First-year Niall Shiels-Donegan placed T-19th (76-75-74=225).
CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
After earning the Big Ten's automatic qualifier, Northwestern will await its draw in the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The selection show will air on Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1, at 1 p.m. CT. Regionals will take place at six sites from May 13-15 and the national championships will be held May 24-29 in Carlsbad, Calif. at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.
