Indiana Outlasts Northwestern in 12-Inning Marathon

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Wildcats went toe-to-toe with the Indiana Hoosiers for 12 innings on Saturday, but ultimately fell 5-2 at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.
Freshman Sam Garewal started the ballgame and went 6.1 shutout innings while allowing four hits, walking none and striking out seven. After throwing a season-high 4.1 innings, junior Ben Grable (1-1) ended with the loss for Northwestern (8-33, 3-14 B1G).
In the batter's box, the Wildcats were led by senior Cooper Foard, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a double and an RBI. Senior Luke Tanner put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-5 with a double. Sophomore Bennett Markinson also chipped in for Northwestern, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Northwestern got on the board thanks to Foard's two-out, RBI double.
Garewal locked down the Hoosiers, and they went scoreless through the first five. Northwestern added to their lead in the fifth inning, pushing across a run on Tanner's double, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Wildcats.
Indiana's bats struck back in the eighth inning, using two singles and a double to knot the game up at two runs apiece. From there, it was back to a pitchers' duel, as both staffs held their opponents scoreless through the next four innings. The Hoosiers finally broke through in the top of the 12th, when they pushed three runs across to take their first lead of the ballgame. The 'Cats had no answer in the bottom half of the inning, and they fell in game two by a final score of 5-2.
