EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Griffin Arnone and sophomore Alex Calarco each racked up two extra base hits, but the Northwestern Wildcats fell to the Indiana Hoosiers 11-9 on Sunday.
Junior Luke Benneche (0-7) started and took the loss on the mound for Northwestern (8-34, 3-15). Sophomore Grant Comstock was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 1.1 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.
Arnone's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-5 day, and included two doubles. Calarco made his contribution with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBI, part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Senior Evan Minarovic also helped out for the Wildcats off the bench, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a home run and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Wildcats had an answer in their half. Arnone's RBI double was the key hit in Northwestern's three-run first inning.
The 'Cats kept the Hoosiers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the third. Northwestern pushed across a run on Owen McElfatrick's two-out RBI double, which made it a one-run ballgame.
Indiana built their lead again to 9-4 before the Northwestern offense got going, reducing that lead to 9-6 in the fourth. The Wildcats added two to their tally on Calarco's two-run homer to right.
The Hoosiers once again expanded their lead to 11-6 before Northwestern got back to work. Sophomore Bennett Markinson and senior Cooper Foard each scored a run for the Wildcats in the seventh inning, tightening the Indiana lead to 11-8.
The Wildcats picked up one more run on Minarovic's two-out solo home run in the ninth, but were unable to get any closer, and the Hoosiers took the finale by a final score of 11-9.
