Sophomore ties 18-hole program record in scintillating final-round performance

NOTRE DAME, Ind. (October 3, 2023) – Ethan Tseng matched the top 18-hole effort in Wildcat annals en route to claiming individual medalist honors as the Northwestern University men's golf team placed second overall at the Fighting Irish Classic in Notre Dame, Ind. earlier in the week.

The 'Cats finished the 54-hole event at the par-70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course with a team score of 837 (283-278-276), finishing as part of a tie for second place alongside Big Ten rival Indiana (279-277-281=837).  Tennessee took home the team title, posting a tally of 830 (280-280-270).

Tseng turned in a red-hot final-round performance, finishing for eagle on the par-four third hole before birdying six of his final 15 holes to hand in an eight-under-par 62 that matches Jess Daley's 18-hole program record, set at the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Championships during the 1999-2000 season.  The Portland, Ore. native finished his week with an eight-under-par 202 (72-68-62) to outdistance Tennessee's Caleb Surratt (69-68-66=203) by one stroke to secure the first victory of his collegiate career.

Daniel Svärd joined Tseng in the top five, placing fourth overall with a four-under-par 206 (67-69-70).  Svärd, out of Jarfalla, Sweden, finished with seven birdies as part of a three-under-par 67 during first-round play on Sunday morning.

James Imai and Archie Finnie each landed as part of a tie for 32nd place at 215.  Imai (72-71-72) turned in his top round of the event during second-round action, firing a 71, while Finnie (73-70-72), who made his debut in the Wildcat lineup, shot an even-par 70 during his second round.  Cameron Adam checked in one shot back of the duo, carding a 216 (72-71-73) to share 36th.

Niall Shiels-Donegan competed as an individual at the event, improving his score throughout all three rounds of play on his way to a 227 (80-74-73) to place 77th.
