THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
-
Evan Hull produced a historic day at Ryan Field against Duke, totaling 278 yards of offense (14 catches for 213 yards, 17 carries for 65 yards) and two touchdowns. Since at least 2000, Hull is the first Division-I player with 210+ receiving yards and 50+ rushing yards in a single game and the first Big Ten running back with 14+ catches in a game. The Maple Grove, Minn. native currently leads Division-I with 226 total yards per game.
- Ryan Hilinski threw for 435 yards and two touchdowns last weekend against Duke, the first 400+ yard game by a Northwestern quarterback since Clayton Thorson did so in 2018. Hilinski leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth in Division-I at 374.5 yards per game and his 749 passing yards are the most by a NU quarterback through the first two games of a season since at least 2000. In the last 20 years, only three Big Ten QB's have ever thrown for more passing yards in the first two games of a season (2019 Elijah Sindelar (932), 2021 CJ Stroud (778) and 2014 Christian Hackenberg (773)).
- Northwestern leads the all-time series vs. Southern Illinois, 1-0. The programs' lone meeting coming in 2008, with the 'Cats besting the Salukis, 33-7, in heavy rainfall at Ryan Field. After Southern Illinois jumped out to a 7-6 lead, Northwestern scored 26 unanswered points to close out the game. Tyrell Sutton paced the Wildcats with 101 rushing yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns ... Corey Wootton led the 'Cats defense with 2.0 sacks and 3.0 TFL, while Jacob Schmidt (NU's current Director of Football Operations) was the special teams standout as a redshirt first-year walk-on, recording a blocked punt in the second half
