No. 6 Wildcats Four-Game Win Streak Snapped by No. 2 UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Taking on its third ranked opponent in a row, No. 6 Northwestern lacrosse fell at No. 2 North Carolina, 20-9, on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field. Lauren Gilbert led the Wildcats (4-2) offensive attack with four goals and added five draw controls. NU's four-game win streak came to a close, which included two wins against ranked competition.
UNC took an 8-4 lead into intermission after outscoring NU 6-1 in the second period. Erin Coykendall scored two of her three total goals in the first half, and helped the Wildcats hold a 3-2 edge after one period.
Gilbert tallied two goals in the fourth quarter and recorded her 31st career hat trick and 20th career game scoring four or more goals. Coykendall added three goals, for her second hat trick of the season. Jill Girardi recorded a team-high six draw controls.
NU logged a 17-16 advantage in draw controls.
North Carolina's (6-0) Sam Geiersbach scored a game-high five goals. The Tar Heels tallied three goals in the third and nine scores in the fourth quarter.
Northwestern will face its third top-10 opponent in a row when it welcomes No. 5 Stony Brook to Ryan Fieldhouse at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 10.
