EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 5 Northwestern's offense came alive in a Top-10 matchup at Ryan Fieldhouse on Thursday evening, powering past No. 6 Stony Brook in a 16-12 statement win.
Offense took center stage along Lake Michigan, and a trio of Wildcat scoring bursts proved too much for the visiting Seawolves to handle. Junior attacker Erin Coykendall had a masterful performance, registering four goals and a game-high five assists, while junior attacker Dylan Amonte tallied a career-high three goals in the victory. The Wildcats' facilitation turned out to be a major factor, evidenced by a commanding 12-5 advantage in assists.
Northwestern took a lead early and never ceded control of the game. After a quiet opening for both offenses, the Wildcats struck first by building a three-goal lead in the game's opening half. When Stony Brook answered back and cut the deficit to just 4-3 early in the second quarter, Northwestern's offense built its lead back up with a flurry of scores.
While Coykendall led all scorers in the first half with a hat trick and graduate midfielder Brennan Dwyer's goal boosted the 'Cats' lead to 9-3, a couple of other Northwestern playmakers had breakout performances. Senior midfielder Elle Hansen scored her first two goals of the season and Amonte added a pair of goals as well in the Wildcats' prolific first half.
Northwestern's offense didn't let up after the halftime break. Junior midfielder Hunter Chadwick chipped in her first goal of the season to cap off a three-goal spurt by the 'Cats midway through the frame.
The Northwestern defense also held up its end, with seven saves from senior goalkeeper Madison Doucette and six caused turnovers, and the Wildcats never allowed their lead to dip below four goals in the second half.
Next up for the Wildcats — a pivotal Big Ten season opener against Ohio State. Northwestern will host the Buckeyes in Ryan Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. CT.
