Northwestern Falls to #21 Maryland, 70-52

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Northwestern dropped a road conference matchup on Tuesday evening to No. 21 Maryland, 70-52, at the XFINITY Center.
Sophomore guard Anthony Gaines set his career high with 18 points, including a career-high tying seven free throws made. He has scored in double digits in two out of the last three games.
Senior center Dererk Pardon finished with 14 points, his 19th double-digit scoring performance this season. He also added seven rebounds.
Chicago's Big Ten Team only gave up the ball seven times, tied for the second-fewest turnovers this season. Northwestern had 18 points off turnovers in the contest, compared to Maryland's five.
Northwestern was limited offensively in the first half, shooting 23 percent. NU was led by Pardon in the first stanza, who contributed seven points and five rebounds. Gaines also had seven points in the half, including three free throws.
The Wildcats were effective, however, in taking control of the basketball in the first period, as Northwestern only allowed three turnovers. Maryland had seven turnovers in the half.
Gaines had 11 of his 17 points in the second half. He also added five boards in the second period.
The Wildcats are back in action on February 4 at home against Penn State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
