Nebraska Takes Big Ten Decision Over Northwestern, 70-55

1/2/2018 9:42:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Pardon leads Wildcats with 17 points, 15 rebounds

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Dererk Pardon registered his seventh career double-double, highlighted by a season-high 15 rebounds. Despite a monster effort from the junior center, Northwestern was unable to overcome a tough shooting day, falling to Nebraska, 70-55, at Allstate Arena.

Pardon turned in a solid all-around performance, finishing the game with 17 points, 11 offensive rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Tuesday's performance also marks the third double-double Pardon has recorded against Nebraska during his career.

The Wildcats were missing one of their leading contributors in Bryant McIntosh, who is day-to-day with a knee injury, and struggled to get anything to fall from the field for much of the night, converting on 19-of-65 attempts on the night.

Scottie Lindsey finished with 12 points and four assists, while Aaron Falzon also finished in double figures with 11 points, shooting 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Vic Law contributed with eight points and eight rebounds.

Falzon came off the bench to help provide a spark for the Wildcats' offense early in the game, jumpstarting a 11-0 run with a three-pointer followed by a layup. A jumper by Jordan Ash at the 9:33 mark extended Northwestern's lead to 16-10, its largest lead of the half.

The #B1GCats' defense made life difficult for Nebraska throughout the first half, holding them to 29.6 percent shooting and forcing seven turnovers. The Wildcats also held the Cornhuskers scoreless for nearly five minutes during the Northwestern run midway through the first half.

A 10-2 run by Northwestern to close the half, which included back-to-back threes by Falzon and Lindsey on NU's final two possessions, sent the Wildcats into intermission with a 30-25 lead.

Pardon turned in a solid first half performance as he finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Falzon also finished with eight points of his own on 3-of-4 shooting. Both teams struggled shooting from the field, with Northwestern converting on 12-of-39 field goals, while the Cornhuskers shot 8-of-27 from the field.

The Wildcats also registered 26 total rebounds as a team in the period, 14 coming on the offensive glass, which they converted into 12 second chance turnovers on the half.

Pardon's layup to open the second half gave the Wildcats a seven point lead, but Northwestern had a difficult time getting shots to fall to start the second half and, as a result, Nebraska was able to take back the lead.

The Cornhuskers ramped up their shooting efforts, finishing the half shooting 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field, helping to extend their lead to double figures. Northwestern was unable to recover, ultimately falling 70-55.

Northwestern is back in action Friday, Jan. 5 when it travels to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions at the Bryce Jordan Center. Tip time is 7 p.m. CT with the action being televised on FS1.
