Mansfield notches game-winner in second extra session
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Kirsten Mansfield's rebound goal off a penalty corner in the second overtime gave No. 9 Northwestern a 2-1 win over No. 24 UMass Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats dominated the Minutewomen to the tune of a 19-1 advantage in shots over the first 67 minutes of the contest.
UMass was awarded its second penalty corner of the match with 2:20 remaining and Annie Kalfas came up with a save. However, the visitors earned another corner with a minute and a half remaining and UMass cashed in, stunning the Wildcats with a goal by Melanie Kreusch to tie the match 1-1 with just 1:19 left in regulation.
The match would go to overtime where the Minutewomen had the momentum, recording a pair of early shots, including one on goal that forced Annie Kalfas to make a save.
UMass would earn a pair of corners, but the Wildcats stood tall, including Kalfas making a save on one. Saar de Breij had a late opportunity, but Emily Hazard was able to make a save as the match went to a second overtime.
Sophia Miller, who had the golden goal in Friday's win at Iowa, nearly posted her second game-winner in three days four minutes into the second OT as she left a defender in her wake, but her shot went just outside the far post.
After the Wildcats stopped UMass on a penalty corner, Northwestern converted on its second corner of the period. Puck Pentenga's hit from the top of the circle deflected to Eva van Agt who got off a shot that was saved by Hazard before Mansfield knocked home the rebounding, giving NU the win.
Northwestern finished the match with advantages of 24-8 in shots and 12-6 in penalty corners.
The Wildcats completely dominated the opening half as it outshot UMass 11-0 and finally got a goal at the 33:57 mark when Pascale Massey scored off an assist from Pentenga.
The one-goal lead held up throughout the majority of the second half until UMass got the late equalizer, but NU eventually earned the hard-fought win.
Northwestern heads to Michigan on Friday with the Big Ten regular season title on the line. The Wildcats trail the Wolverines by one game for first place in the conference standings with two matches remaining. Friday's contest gets underway at 3 p.m. and is being televised by Big Ten Network.
NU returns home next Sunday when it takes on Michigan State on Senior Day beginning at noon.
