EVANSTON, Ill. - Ready to begin Big Ten competition, the No. 1 Northwestern field hockey team (8-0) is set to host Indiana (4-4) on Friday, Sept. 26. The Wildcats will take on the Hoosiers at home at 3 p.m. CT after a perfect non-conference start to the season.
The conference and home opener for the Wildcats will be streamed on B1G+, played at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. NU seeks to claim another Big Ten regular season title, which would be its third in a row. The 'Cats are the only undefeated team remaining in the conference, and lead the nation in goals allowed (two).
Scouting the Hoosiers
Northwestern leads, 22-10, in the all-time series against Indiana, dating back to 1980. The most recent matchup was in 2024, a 1-0 victory for NU at Deborah Tobias Field.
The Hoosiers' 2025 offense has been led by Ines Garcia Prado, as the junior midfielder has notched 14 points through eight games. Garcia Prado is the lone Hoosier to appear in the 2025 NFHCA Preseason Watchlist. The junior leads the conference with three defensive saves on the year. Ten Hoosiers have scored a goal this season, while 16 have taken shots.
Northwestern Notables
Last weekend, after a strong 4-0 victory at Delaware on Friday, the 'Cats closed their season-opening road stretch, taking their sixth shutout of the year with a 5-0 win at Villanova.
Big Ten Players of the Week: Juliana Boon (Defensive) and Ilse Tromp (Offensive).
The 'Cats defense on the field has been elite, holding opponents to 50 shots to NU's 150. When she does face a shot, Boon's efficiency in the cage establishes her as a leader in the Big Ten and NCAA. Now with 23 saves and only two goals allowed, Boon holds a goals allowed average of 0.25. She leads the conference in minutes played (483), GAA (0.25), save percentage (.920), wins (seven), and shutouts (six).
Earning her first Offensive Player of the Week, Tromp's five goals in the past weekend put up a dominant offensive performance on the road. Notching her first career hat trick, the junior played a key role in the two victories, scoring a total of 10 points. She is third in the league in goals, having scored more than half of her season total this past weekend. The No. 1 'Cats have outscored their opponents this season 26-2, while Tromp leads the squad in points (16).
NFHCA Week Two Ranking: No. 1. The Sept. 23 ranking maintains NU's Week One and Two No. 1 position, following its first-ever unanimous preseason No. 1 from the NFHCA. The Wildcats spent six weeks in the No. 1 spot last season en route to winning the program's second national title.
After claiming their second national championship in four years and eighth Big Ten regular season title, the 'Cats look ahead to attack their 2025 slate. Over half of Northwestern's 2025 opponents appear in NFHCA preseason rankings.
The 2025 captains for Northwestern are Greta Hinke, Aerin Krys, and Maddie Zimmer.
