Wildcats host Michigan State Sunday on Senior Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- No. 8 Northwestern gave fourth-ranked Michigan all it could handle, but a late goal by the Wolverines gave the hosts a 1-0 win Friday afternoon at Ocker Field.

The Wildcats (12-5, 5-2 B1G) entered the contest with an opportunity to earn a share of the Big Ten regular season title with the Wolverines with a win on Friday and another over Michigan State on Sunday. However, Michigan earned the title outright and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Big Ten tournament.

The Wildcats earned the first scoring chance of the contest just a minute into play as they earned a penalty corner. However, the shot was blocked and NU was turned away.

Michigan had the possession edge throughout the majority of the opening half, but Northwestern was solid in its defensive third as it limited the Wolverines' scoring chances.

Annie Kalfas came up big in goal when needed, including extending to make a kick save 15 minutes in before coming up consecutive saves off a Michigan corner with 12 minutes left in the opening stanza.

On the Wolverines' two other corners over the opening 35 minutes of play, Elena Curley made a pair of big plays as the flyer as she blocked a pair of shots.

The teams were scoreless heading into halftime with Michigan holding edges of 8-3 in shots and 3-1 in corners.

Northwestern came out the aggressors early in the second half as Michigan picked up a pair of green cards while the 'Cats earned a corner in the opening three minutes of the period.

It was NU that seized the momentum, as it showed more poise after the intermission and gained the possession edge. The Wildcats had an opportunity to notch the go-ahead goal with 15 minutes left as a scrum in front of the Michigan cage resulted in goalie Sam Swenson being down on the ground, but Northwestern was unable to knock a goal in the cage.

The Wolverines caught a break in taking the lead with 9:11 remaining. After earning a penalty corner, the hit from the top of the circle deflected off the foot of a Northwestern player and went in, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats earned one final opportunity to tie the match in the closing seconds. NU called a timeout with the ball 25 yards out and 21 seconds remaining. Northwestern was able to earn a penalty corner with regulation expired, giving it a chance to force overtime. The hit from the top of the circle appeared to hit a foot of a Michigan defender, but the Wildcats were not awarded another corner as Michigan held on.

Northwestern returns home to close out its regular season at noon Sunday when it faces Michigan State. The Wildcats will honor their seniors in pregame ceremonies.
