EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern men's golf tees of the 2015-16 season on Friday at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational, hosted by Big Ten foe Illinois.
Now in it's 10th season, the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational welcomes the nation's top teams to the famed Olympia Fields Country Club. The club is home to several premier events including the 2015 U.S. Amateur. Olympia Fields has hosted two U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, five Western Opens and a U.S. Senior Open among other high-level tournaments.
The Olympia Fields North Course will play to a 7,142-yard, par-70 layout for the tournament with 18 holes on each of the event's three days. Tee times Friday and Saturday begin at 9 a.m. CT, while Sunday's final round gets underway at 8 a.m. CT. Live results will be available at Golfstat.com.
The field consists of eight teams that landed on the 2015-16 Bushnell Golfweek Preseason Coaches Poll, including top-ranked host Illinois.
Senior Josh Jamieson will pace the Wildcats after an outstanding junior campaign. Jamieson competed in all of NU's tournaments last season, ranking second on the team behind sophomore Dylan Wu with a 72.93 scoring average. He led Chicago's Big Ten Team in four tournaments, racking up four top-20 finishes and two top-10s with 12 rounds at par or better. Outside of collegiate competition, Jamieson advanced through local U.S. Open qualifying this past summer.
Wu will also compete for the Wildcats this weekend after leading Northwestern with a 72.21 scoring average as a freshman. He picked up his first collegiate win in just his fourth-career event at UCLA's Gifford Collegiate last fall fall. The sophomore standout had six top-20 finishes and three top-10s, including a fifth-place result at the NCAA New Haven Regional after gaining entrance as an individual alternate just three days before the event started. He was one stroke shy of a potential berth at the NCAA National Championships with that performance.
Andrew Whalen, a redshirt senior, returns to action at the Illini Invite after missing the 2014-15 season. Whalen finished the 2013-14 year ranked second for the Wildcats in full-season stroke average at 74.13, carding nine rounds at par or better. In the summer of 2014, he shot a final-round 3-under 67 at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship to earn a top-25 finish.
Jamieson, Wu and Whalen were all recently named to the 2015-16 Big Ten Golfers to Watch list.
Ryan Lumsden and Luke Miller, two of four newcomers to the 2015 roster, will make their collegiate debuts with the #B1GCats this weekend.
Lumsden, a Scotland native, won the silver medal at the 2014 Scottish Boys Championship by shooting 69 and 68 at Cruden Bay and finished 18th out of 252 during stroke play at the 2014 British Boys before advancing to the Round of 32 in match play. He competed for his school, Wellington College, which has been ranked No. 1 in the UK twice and No. 2 once during his tenure.
Miller Miller competed in the 2014 U.S. Amateur, firing a second-round 69 to finish just one stroke away from qualifying for match play. He advanced to Sectional Qualifying for the 2014 U.S. Open, as well. The freshman, who hails from Pennsylvania and was homeschooled, also won a pair of Florida state team championships in 2012 and 2013 with Lakewood Ranch High School.
