LAFAYETTE, La. -- Northwestern fought through a tough day on the course Monday during the first two rounds of the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette at Oakbourne Country Club.

The Wildcats currently find themselves in 13th position among the 14-team field at 15-over 591 (294-297), but the good news is there is room to climb in Tuesday's final round. NU is two strokes behind 12th-place Southern Mississippi and just nine strokes away from seventh-place Southeastern Louisiana, giving the 'Cats ample opportunity with one of their patented final round charges.

Northwestern began Monday's 36-hole shotgun start in the middle holes on the front nine.

Junior Josh Jamieson (St. Andrews, Scotland/High School of Dundee) was in 12th place in the individual standings following a morning round of 1-under 71. He made birdie at his very first hole, the 200-yard par-3 fourth, and spent the majority of the round at 2-under until he turned back for home and suffered back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 1 and 2. On his final hole of the morning, he drained a birdie putt at the 552-yard par-5 third hole to finish in red figures.

The afternoon was unfortunately a different tale. Jamieson again birdied his very first hole, but that was the only birdie he made in the second round en route to a 4-over 76, placing him 35th overall in the field at 3-over 147 (71-76).

Freshman Dylan Wu (Medford, Ore./St. Mary's School) made a couple of early bogeys in his first round and was 2-over through six holes. He remained on that number until a birdie at No. 3, but he made bogey on his final hole, the par-4 fifth, to finish at 2-over 74. In the afternoon, he made three birdies but also had four bogeys to again find himself over par with a 1-over 73. Wu is tied with Jamieson in 35th position at 3-over 147 (74-73).

Freshman Sam Triplett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) made one birdie in his opening round against four bogeys and a double for a 5-over 77, then bounced back quite nicely in the afternoon. An early bogey at his third hole, the 162-yard par-3 ninth, put him over par before he countered immediately with back-to-back birdies at Nos. 10 and 11 to dig down under par. He again fought back after a late bogey with a birdie at No. 3 to finish the second round in red figures at 1-under 71. Triplett is in 43rd place at 4-over 148 (77-71).

Triplett's second round 71 was the freshman's first under-par collegiate round.

Freshman Charles Wang's (Beijing, China/Sarasota Christian School) day was defined by two bad holes that left him in 59th place at 7-over 151 (74-77). In the morning, he made two bogeys and two birdies, but suffered a double bogey at the short 488-yard par-5 11th to account for his margin over par. Then, in the afternoon, Wang had two birdies, three bogeys and a quadruple bogey 9 at the 599-yard par 5 13th hole that led to a 5-over 77.

Senior Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) climbed quickly to 4-over par during the morning loop before fighting back admirably with three birdies in a five-hole stretch from Nos. 12 through 16, getting himself all the way back down to 1-over. Two more bogeys on the way home, though, gave him a 3-over 75.

In the afternoon, he started bogey-bogey and made three more bogeys in his final four holes to end up at 5-over 77 and 8-over 152 (75-77) for the event, putting him 68th in the field.

The third and final round of the 30th Annual Louisiana Classics commences tomorrow morning, Tuesday, March 3.
