SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- Northwestern is in 10th place at The Gifford Collegiate hosted by UCLA after firing a 4-over 364 during Monday's opening round of the 3-day, 54-hole tournament.

NU is one stroke behind ninth-place Charlotte and four strokes in front of a three-way tie for 11th: Colorado, Oklahoma and Ohio State, the only other Big Ten team in the 14-team field. Duke leads the tournament at 10-under 350.

The Gifford Collegiate, formerly the CordeValle Collegiate, is unique in college golf in that teams enter six participants in the field, with the best five scores of each round counting for the team total. Most other college tournaments see five individuals per team, with four scoring in a round.

Junior David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) leads Northwestern in the individual standings, currently sitting in 12th place. He played even-par golf on the front nine before recording three birdies on the back, including two on both backside par-5's to finish the day with a 2-under 70.

Freshman Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) began his day with seven-straight pars before making two birdies and two bogies from Nos. 8-12. He then concluded his opening round with six more pars for an even-par 72, entering Tuesday in 32nd place.

Sophomore Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School), fresh off his runner-up performance at the Asian Amateur Championship, fired a 1-over 73 on Monday. He made a pair of bogies on the front before playing the back side in 1-under 35, putting him in 41st position.

Junior Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) is 50th after making three birdies against five bogies for a 2-over 74 in the opening round. Sophomore Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) recovered from a double bogey on the first hole to play the rest of the way in 1-over par, finishing with a 3-over 75. He is 60th in the individual race.

Senior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) rounded out Northwestern's day with a 5-over 77, putting him 70th entering the second round.

The Gifford Collegiate continues tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 10, with the second round of the three-day event.
