SAN MARTIN, Calif. -- On a tough scoring day that saw all but the top four team finishers shoot over par, Northwestern slipped one spot during Wednesday's final round to place 12th at the 2009 Gifford Collegiate.
After shooting team rounds of 4-over par and even par on the first two days, the Wildcats fired a final round 22-over 382 to finish at 26-over 1,106 (364-360-382). NU finished one shot in front of Ohio State, the only other Big Ten school in the field, and two shots behind 11th-place Colorado. Stanford won the event.
The Gifford Collegiate participants field teams of six, with the top five scoring for each squad. This differs from the usual play five, score four formula in collegiate golf.
Juniors David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) and Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) both tied for 43rd position to lead the Wildcats, with Dupont shooting a final-round 2-over 74 for his 4-over 220 (74-72-74) in the event. Lipsky, who entered the final day in seventh place, had a rough go Wednesday with a 9-over 81 to record his 4-over 220 (70-69-81).
One day after making seven birdies, senior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) made five more on Wednesday. Five bogies and a double, however, put him at 2-over for the day and 5-over for the tournament (77-70-74=221), good for 46th place.
Sophomore Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) placed 57th in the field at 8-over 224 (73-74-77) while classmate Sam Chien (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) was two strokes behind him in 72nd with a 10-over 226 (75-75-76). Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) rounded out NU's tournament with a 17-over 233 (72-78-83).
Northwestern now is done with the fall portion of its schedule, returning to action Feb. 12-13, 2010, at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Coral Springs, Fla.
