AUSTIN, Texas -- Northwestern's men's golf team placed 12th at the prestigious Morris Williams Intercollegiate Tournament, held at the Austin Country Club. This is the 36th year for the event, named in honor of the former University of Texas golf star Morris Williams Jr., who died in a jet plane while in the Air Force in 1953.
The Wildcats finished 34 strokes behind the host Longhorns, who won their own tournament for the first time since 1993. It was their 11th Morris Williams' title overall.
Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) turned in his top outing of the spring, shooting a 7-over-par 223 to finish in a six-way tie for 15th place. Junior Bjorn Widerstedt (Vasteras, Sweden/Flagler College) and sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) finished 13- and 14-over-par, respectively, for placings of 35th and 40th.
Host Texas, led by medalist John Klauk (5-under-par), finished three strokes in front of Pepperdine.
Northwestern is next in action at the Compaq U.S. Collegiate Golf Championships, which begin Friday, April 5.
