IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Northwestern's Wildcats were unable to take advantage of a 5-over-par day by leader Purdue and slipped to fifth at the 2002 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships at Iowa's Finkbine Golf Course.
NU finished 8-over for the day and is now 4-over for the tournament, seven strokes behind the Boilermakers. Indiana and Minnesota are now tied for third, one stroke in front of the Wildcats. Illinois shot a 6-under 282 for the day and made the biggest climb, jumping to second place, two shots out of first.
Junior Scott Harrington (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) was the only Wildcat to finish under par, shooting a 2-under 70. He is now even for the tournament and tied for ninth place overall.
Senior Chris Thayer (Richmond, Va./Godwin) and sophomore Tom Johnson (Fair Oaks, Calif./Del Campo) both finished 3-over on Saturday and are tied for 20th and 23rd, respectively.
