‘Cats Stay Perfect in Big Ten, Taylor Scores 200th in Rout of Rutgers

4/6/2025 2:55:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — No. 3 Northwestern (11-2, 5-0) continued its dominant run through Big Ten play Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 15-6 win over Rutgers (8-6,2-3) behind a milestone performance from Madison Taylor.
Taylor scored five goals and dished out two assists to headline a balanced attack and became the latest Wildcat to reach the 200-goal mark in her career. The five-goal outing gives her 64 this season, the Junior having scored 83 total in her sophomore season.
Northwestern fell behind early after conceding the game's opening goal, but responded with authority. Niki Miles got the Wildcats on the board shortly after, sparking an eight-goal run that stretched deep into the second quarter. By halftime, the Lake Show had built a 9-2 lead and seized full control of the game.

Miles, Lucy Munro and Sam Smith all scored twice, while Hannah Johnson, Riley Campbell, Emerson Bohlig and Lauren Archer each added one. Munro continued her recent tear with her seventh goal across the last three Big Ten contests. Campbell's goal came in front of a hometown crowd in her native New Jersey.
After a third-quarter lull that saw Rutgers briefly cut the deficit to five, Taylor reignited the offense with back-to-back goals to end the frame and start the fourth. Her fifth goal of the day, and 200th of her career, came with 11:07 remaining in the final quarter, punctuating the win.

Smith played a crucial role in the possession game, posting a team-high 12 draw controls. As a unit, the Wildcats won 17 of 24 draws and outshot the Scarlet Knights 37-20.

Northwestern's defense was just as dominant. Goalkeeper Delaney Sweitzer tallied nine saves and helped shut down Rutgers for long stretches of play. Sammy White starred on the back line with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers and two draw controls, anchoring a defensive unit that forced 16 turnovers overall. Mary Carroll added two ground balls and two caused turnovers, continuing her consistent play on the back line.
Northwestern improved to 19-1 all-time against Rutgers and remains the Big Ten's only unbeaten team. The Wildcats return home next weekend to face Oregon for the first time as Big Ten foes. The matchup will be played outdoors for the first time this season at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium, with opening draw set for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, April 13. The game will stream on B1G+, tickets are available here.
