EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 3 Northwestern (11-2, 5-0 Big Ten) lacrosse team returns home aiming to build on its lead atop the conference standings when it hosts Oregon (5-8, 0-6 Big Ten) in the schools' first ever meeting as league foes on Sunday, April 13 at 1 p.m. CT on B1G+. The Wildcats will shift outside to Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium for the remainder of the season and will play in the new temporary lakeside facility for the first time on Sunday.
The Wildcats are on a three-game winning streak, with each triumph coming on the road against a Big Ten Conference foe. Over this stretch, NU outscored No. 18 USC (17-8), No. 4 Johns Hopkins (18-5) and Rutgers (15-6) by a 50-19 margin. For the season, the Wildcats are the nation's sixth-best scoring offense, averaging 16.3 goals per game, and boast the country's third-stingiest defense (7.5 goals against per game). Northwestern has won 11 straight Big Ten games, the longest active streak in the conference and the sixth-longest nationally.
Junior Madison Taylor continues to pace the 'Cats attack with 64 goals (t-first in NCAA) and 89 points (first). She earned Offensive Player of the Week honors from both the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) and Big Ten after putting up 15 points (9 goals, 6 assists) in a pair of victories at Johns Hopkins and Rutgers last week. Sammy White drew IWLCA and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week accolades as well after helping Northwestern hold its opponents to just 11 goals while adding in 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers a week ago. Rounding out the individual awards was Sam Smith, who scooped up 24 of the 'Cats' 36 draw controls to earn Big Ten Midfielder of the Week recognition.
Oregon has struggled in its first go round through the Big Ten, losing six-straight to start conference play and getting outscored 101-43 in the process. Bri Carrasquillo (33 goals) and Anna Simmons (31 goals) are the Ducks' go-to scorers with each finding the back of the net over 30 times this season.
Sunday will be the first time Northwestern and Oregon have met since March 3, 2012, a 15-2 NU win in Evanston. The Wildcats are 2-0 all-time against the Ducks.
Northwestern closes out its home regular season slate on Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m. when it hosts Michigan for Lacrosse Night in Chicago, showcasing the growth of the sport in the Chicagoland area and Midwest region. The game will air on Big Ten Network.
