EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis (4-5) dominated their way to a pair of home victories on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center, sweeping Illinois State (3-7) and IU Indy (4-5) in back-to-back matches.
The day's action began with a close battle with the Redbirds for the doubles point. Northwestern eventually triumphed with a 6-4 victory from the first-year duo of Carter Pate and Vincent Yang and a 7-5 win from Chad Miller and Saiprakash Goli.
In singles play against Illinois State, the 'Cats made quick work of their opponents on nearly every court. Max Bengtsson didn't drop a single game, winning 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position to improve to 3-3 in dual season. After Felix Nordby defeated his opponent in straight sets as well (6-1, 7-5), Miller provided match point with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles. With Northwestern's team win already secured, Goli (6-1, 6-4) and Greyson Casey (6-4, 7-5) added on with victories of their own. Pate completed the sweep in a 10-4 super tiebreak, bagging the seventh and final point for Northwestern.
Much like the morning match, the Wildcats faced a competitive doubles round to kick off competition against IU Indy in the evening match. After the Jaguars took doubles No. 3, Nordby and Casey edged out their opponents, 7-5, at No. 1 to even the count. With the match's first point on the line, Miller and Goli pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind victory at the No. 2 position to complete a 2-0 day as a pair and give Northwestern the 1-0 lead.
Once again, the Wildcats impressed on all six singles courts. Northwestern took every set of singles action to cruise to its second 7-0 win of the day and the second doubleheader sweep of the season. Miller won a pair of 6-1 sets to finish off a 4-0 day individually. He was followed by Pate (6-2, 6-2), then Nordby (6-1, 6-1), who clinched the match with his second singles win of the day. Bengtsson (6-3, 6-0) and Casey (6-4, 6-4) also notched wins, and Jackson Caldwell, making his first dual appearance of the season, contributed a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles.
Saturday's wins completed the first two of nine straight home matches for men's tennis, who will return to action next week when they host Memphis on Friday at Combe. The match will serve as the second half of a combined doubleheader with women's tennis, who is set to host Vanderbilt at 4 p.m. Men's tennis' match against Memphis is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. CT.
