EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's tennis (5-7) finished off its weekend schedule with a victory, defeating Chicago State by a final score of 6-0 at Combe Tennis Center on Sunday evening. The win followed a pair of close losses to Memphis and No. 50 Notre Dame in a busy weekend for the 'Cats.
The weekend's action began on Friday night, when Memphis (7-7) visited Combe for the first of the Wildcats' three matches. Though the Tigers built up a 3-0 lead to begin the match, the 'Cats nearly clawed all the way back before eventually falling 4-3.
After Memphis won the doubles point and singles Nos. 6 and 2, Max Bengtsson put Northwestern on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot. He was followed by first-year Carter Pate, who won a thrilling three-set victory over Memphis' Harry Rock at No. 4 singles. After winning the first set 6-1 and falling just short in the second set, 6-7 (2-7), Pate sealed the deal with a 6-4 win in set three.
Felix Nordby tied the match up at three apiece with his own three-set win at No. 3 singles. After dropping his first set, 5-7, a pair of 6-4 sets followed to give Nordby his seventh individual victory of the season. The match then came down to the No. 1 spot, where Saiprakash Goli fell just short against No. 88 Conor Gannon in a heartbreaking third-set tiebreak that gave Memphis the 4-3 victory.
Sunday's doubleheader began with a matchup against No. 50 Notre Dame (10-2). Once again, the 'Cats fell behind early, and once again, they nearly managed to pull off the comeback.
With the Fighting Irish up 2-0, Nordby stacked his second win of the weekend, 6-2, 6-2, for the first Wildcat point. Bengtsson also added to his win total with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles. Notre Dame regained the lead with a win at the No. 6 spot, but the 'Cats fought hard on the remaining two courts. However, after splitting the first two sets, sophomore Greyson Casey couldn't outlast Chase Thompson at the No. 3 spot. He dropped a third-set tiebreak, 6-8, to secure a 4-2 victory for Notre Dame.
In the weekend finale, the 'Cats were close to perfect in a 6-0 defeat of Chicago State (0-1). To start off, Nordby and Casey cruised to a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, securing the match's first point after Chicago State's forfeit at No. 3.
In singles action against the Cougars, three 'Cats completed their matches without dropping a single game. Owen Megargee, Vincent Yang and Bengtsson all posted spotless 6-0, 6-0 victories to clinch the match for the Wildcats. With the win already in the bag, Casey (6-1, 6-1) and Goli (6-2, 6-2) added on wins of their own to bring the match to its final score of 6-0.
Northwestern men's tennis will continue its extended home stay next weekend, hosting another doubleheader on Saturday, March 1, against Northern Kentucky and Marquette. The morning match is set to begin at 10 a.m. CT, with the afternoon match to follow at 4 p.m. CT.
