EVANSTON, Ill. – Winners of four of its last five games, third-place Northwestern makes its penultimate road trip of the season by traveling to Maryland for a 6 p.m. CT tip on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The game will air on BTN with Jason Horowitz (play-by-play) and Robbie Hummel (analyst) on the call, and on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Radio Channel 385 with Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) describing the action.
The Wildcats (19-8, 10-6 B1G) are searching for their second consecutive 20-win season and would reach the benchmark for just the sixth time in program history. Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins has guided the team to three of its five 20 or more-win seasons. Northwestern has recorded 10 or more Big Ten Conference wins in a season in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. Over the last two seasons, NU has posted 22 conference wins, surpassing the 1930-31 and 1931-32 teams (20 wins) for the most over a two-year span in school history.
Last time out, Boo Buie (2,050 points) became the school's all-time leading scorer, surpassing John Shurna (2,038) in a 76-62 win over Michigan on Thursday, Feb. 22, inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Buie (16 points) also dished out seven assists, reaching at least 15 points and seven assists in a game for the 10th time this season. Ryan Langborg scored a game-high 20 points and tied his career-high draining five 3-pointers. The transfer guard posted 20 or more points in back-to-back games (26 at Indiana) for the first time since the 2023 NCAA Tournament when he recorded 22 points against Missouri and 26 against Creighton, leading Princeton to the Sweet 16.
Brooks Barnhizer tallied his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds and filled the stat sheet by adding three steals and two blocks. His six double-doubles this season are the third-most by a Wildcat since 2010-11, trailing Dererk Pardon (2018-19, 8) and Alex Olah (2014-15, 7). The junior is averaging 14.3 points per game (second on the team) and a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game, which ranks 10th in the Big Ten. His 1.9 steals per game this year rank third in the league.
Buie is fourth in the Big Ten, averaging 18.9 points and 5.2 assists per game, and is the only high-major player in the country logging over 18 points and five assists per game this season. During conference-only games, he is averaging 20.3 points per game, the most by a Wildcat since Shurna in 2010-11 (20.3). On Tuesday, he was named to the Oscar Robertson Trophy and All-America Watch Lists.
Northwestern is one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the ball, leading the Big Ten and ranking sixth nationally, committing just 8.9 turnovers per game. Over their last two games, the Wildcats have combined for just eight turnovers against Indiana (3) and Michigan (5). The 'Cats assist/turnover ratio of 1.79 leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth in the country.
The 'Cats are looking to sweep Maryland in a season series for the first time after downing the Terrapins 72-69 on Jan. 17 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Buie had 20 points and scored the go-ahead bucket with 20 seconds remaining. Maryland leads the all-time series 12-5, but Northwestern has won three of the last five meetings. Collins is 4-11 in his career against Maryland.
The Terrapins (15-13, 7-10 B1G) had their best defensive performance of the year in the last game, holding Rutgers to only 46 points in a 63-46 win on Sunday in Piscataway. Jahmir Young leads Maryland in scoring by averaging 20.9 points per game, while Julian Reese paces the team with 9.9 boards per game.
The Wildcats return home at 4:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 2, to host Iowa, as Billy McKinney becomes the first student-athlete in school history to have their jersey retired. The game will air on BTN and ESPN 1000 WMVP.
