Northwestern Heads to Nebraska for Saturday Showdown

EVANSTON, Ill. – Winners of three of its last four games, Northwestern men's basketball travels to Lincoln to take on Nebraska at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1:15 p.m. CT. The contest will air on BTN with Cory Provus (play-by-play) and Shon Morris (analyst) on the call, while Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) have the radio call on WGN Radio 720 and SiriusXM Channel 385.
Last time out, the Wildcats edged Maryland 72-69 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena to move to 4-2 in Big Ten play. Four 'Cats scored in double figures and the Wildcat defense held Maryland scoreless in the win. The Wildcats held a 30-27 advantage on the glass, winning their 10th consecutive game when outrebounding their opponent. Northwestern's 4-2 start to Big Ten play is its best since starting 7-2 in the 2016-17 season en route to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth.
With 20 seconds to go and NU down 67-66, Boo Buie drove and finished off a layup to put the 'Cats ahead for good. Buie led the team with 20 points and seven assists, marking his fourth game this season with 20-plus points and seven-plus assists, the most of any high major player in the country.
With his third assist of the night, Buie moved into sole possession of second place in program history with 529 career assists, passing Michael "Juice" Thompson. Buie finished the night with 533 career assists.
Brooks Barnhizer posted 15 points, a career-high five steals, four rebounds, and three assists, marking the first time a Wildcat has posted those numbers since at least 2010-11. Ty Berry poured in 11 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line, including 4-for-4 with less than 20 seconds remaining. Matthew Nicholson played his most complete game of the season, posting 10 points and tying for the team-high with seven rebounds.
Entering the game, Ryan Langborg has 995 career points, just five away from the 1,000 mark. The graduate transfer scored 804 career points in his time at Princeton.
Northwestern has been one of the best teams in the country at taking care of the ball this season, leading the Big Ten and ranking eighth nationally, committing just 9.3 turnovers per game. NU's assist/turnover ratio of 1.74 ranks second in the Big Ten and ninth nationally. The Wildcats force an average of 13.8 turnovers per game, which ranks third in the Big Ten.
Northwestern and Nebraska will meet for the 23rd time, with the Wildcats holding a 13-9 advantage in the all-time series. NU has beaten Nebraska seven consecutive times, its most consecutive wins against a Big Ten opponent since defeating Michigan eight straight times from 1958-1962.
Nebraska enters Saturday's contest at 13-5 and 3-4 in Big Ten play, and is coming off an 87-82 overtime setback at Rutgers. Keisei Tominaga leads all Huskers, posting 14.6 points per game while shooting 37.6% from beyond the arc.
