Buie Scores 20 Points, Northwestern Defeats Maryland

EVANSTON, Ill. – Boo Buie recorded 20 points and scored the go-ahead basket with 20 seconds remaining, leading Northwestern to a 72-69 victory inside Welsh-Ryan Arena on Wednesday. The Wildcats are 3-0 against Big Ten competition inside Welsh-Ryan Arena this season, and improved to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

Four Wildcats scored in double figures, led by Buie, who had 20 points and seven assists. Brooks Barnhizer added 15 points and a career-high five steals and Ty Berry helped out with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Wildcats outrebounded Maryland 30-27, marking Northwestern's 10th consecutive Big Ten win when outrebounding its opponent. Matthew Nicholson and Berry led all 'Cats with seven rebounds.

Northwestern forced 13 Maryland turnovers while committing seven itself.

How It Happened

After falling behind 23-20, Northwestern exploded for an 8-0 run with 3:13 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Barnhizer, to take a 28-23 lead just before the intermission. The teams traded baskets to close out the first half, with the Wildcats holding a 32-28 lead at the break, as Buie connected on a buzzer-beating floater. Northwestern capitalized on 10 Maryland turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.

The Terps (11-7, 3-4 B1G) knotted things up at 45-45 before Northwestern went on a 5-0 run to seize a 50-45 lead with 10:14 to go in the contest. A Jahmir Young 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining gave Maryland a 67-66 lead before Northwestern retook the lead for good on a Buie layup with 20 seconds remaining. The 'Cats closed the game out at the charity stripe with six consecutive free throws made to seal the 72-69 victory. The Wildcat bench outscored Maryland's bench 9-0 in the second half.
