EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern looks to win its seventh straight against Nebraska when it travels to Lincoln to take on the Huskers at 6 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The game will air on FS2 and WGN Radio. Kevin Kugler (play-by-play) and Nick Bahe (analyst) will call the action on FS2 and Dave Eanet (play-by-play) and Billy McKinney (analyst) will describe the action on WGN Radio 720.
Last time out, the Wildcats defeated Wisconsin on Monday night 66-63 at Welsh-Ryan Arena behind 20 points, seven rebounds, and five assists from Boo Buie, who led the team in all three categories. Chase Audige chipped in 16 points on 2-for-5 shooting from 3-point range. Matthew Nicholson shot 83% from the charity stripe, making a career-high five free-throws. The win moved the Wildcats to 4-3 in the Big Ten, marking its best start to conference play since the 2016-17 season.
Wednesday will mark the 100th career game for Boo Buie. The senior guard ranks fifth on Northwestern's all-time assists leaderboard with 371 career helpers, eight behind Shawn Watts for fourth place. Buie is one of four players in program history to record 1,000+ career points and 300+ career assists, joining Bryant McIntosh (2014-18), Pat Baldwin (1991-94), Craig Moore (2006-09), and Michael Thompson (2008-11).
In three outings against Nebraska last season, Buie posted 27, 15, and 16 points respectively. In his most recent trip to Pinnacle Bank Arena, he shot 10-for-15 from the field and 6-for-11 from three-point range, scoring 27 points.
Audige is one of just four players in the Big Ten to lead his team in both steals per game and points per game. The Coram, N.Y. native also leads the Big Ten in steals per game (2.7) and ranks third nationally in thefts per game.
Audige (15.3) and Buie (15.3) are the only duo in the Big Ten averaging at least 15 points per game. The last two 'Cats to average over 15 points per game were John Shurna (20.0) and Drew Crawford (16.1) during the 2011-12 season.
The Wildcats have shot the ball well from the free-throw line this season, converting on 75% of their attempts, which ranks fourth in the Big Ten. Individually, the Wildcats boast three of the Big Ten's four top free throw shooters, with Buie ranking second in the conference (88%), Audige ranking third (86%), and Robbie Beran ranking fourth (83%).
Northwestern leads the all-time series 12-9, which is NU's second-best record all-time against a Big Ten opponent (Rutgers). The last meeting between the two teams occurred on March 9, 2022 in the first round the Big Ten Tournament, with the Wildcats coming back from down 15 late in the second half to win 71-69. The 'Cats have won six straight in the series, dating back to January 11, 2020. The last time Northwestern won seven consecutive games against a Big Ten opponent was an eight game win streak over Michigan from 1958-1962.
Nebraska comes into Wednesday night with a 10-10 record and 3-6 mark in Big Ten play after falling at Penn State 76-65. Derrick Walker leads the Huskers in points per game (14.1) and rebounds per game (7.7). Sam Griesel ranks second on the team in points per game, chipping in 11.3 per contest. The Huskers are 7-2 inside Pinnacle Bank Arena this season.
Following the trip to the Cornhusker State, the 'Cats will return home to take on Minnesota on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. The game will be televised on BTN and heard on WGN Radio 720. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Welsh-Ryan Arena Ticket Office, over the phone by calling (888)-467-8775, or online at this link.
