Wildcats Hold Off Badgers for 5-2 Road Win

MADISON, Wis. – No. 26 Northwestern defeated Wisconsin 5-2 on the road on Friday afternoon. 

The Wildcats improved to 14-7 and 4-2 in the Big Ten while dropping the Badgers, ranked No. 62 in the country, to 8-9 and 2-2 in the B1G.

The 'Cats got off to a good start in doubles with a 6-3 win from the ranked pair of Felix Nordby and Steven Forman at No. 1, and a 6-4 win from Natan Spear and Trice Pickens at No. 3. 


Pickens got on the board first in singles with.a 6-3, 6-0 win over Gabriel Huber at No. 3 to make it 2-0.

Forman followed suit at No. 1 with a 7-6 (7), 6-1 win over Jared Pratt, taking a quick second set after prevailing in an intense first set tiebreak.


The Wildcats' mettle at the end of sets proved to be the difference, as Presley Thieneman clinched the win at 4-0 with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory at No. 4 decided on a second set tiebreak.

Simen Bratholm went on to earn the fifth team point after the match was clinched with a comeback 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2. 

Despite a resilient effort from Nordby in the last match of the afternoon with a 10-8 tiebreak in the second set to stay alive, a third set tiebreak separated a close contest to give the Badgers their second point of the day. 

The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, when they complete their road trip at Nebraska.
