No. 9 'Cats Sweep Weekend Series at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern swept both its games in a Sunday doubleheader and secured a weekend sweep over Ohio State to improve to 27-6 on the season.
The Wildcats won the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, 9-8, before shutting down the Buckeyes, 7-1, in the weekend finale behind a Danielle Williams gem.
Seven different Wildcats combined for 12 total hits in the opening game, headlined by a pivotal go-ahead grand slam from Maeve Nelson in the fourth inning. Jordyn Rudd finished the game 3-for-3 with two RBI, two walks, two runs scored and a solo home run.
Rudd followed up that stellar performance in the opening game by going 2-for-2 with three RBI, a home run, two walks and two runs scored in the weekend finale.
All-in-all, Rudd reached base in 12 of her 13 plate appearances over the weekend, hitting .857 (6-for-7) with four extra-base hits (a homer in each game and a double), six RBI, six runs scored.
Skyler Shellmyer tallied three hits in game one of the day and two hits in the weekend finale. The Wildcats' lead-off hitter finished the weekend hitting .583 (7-for-12) with six runs scored, including her first-career home run in Friday's win over the Buckeyes.
A trio of 'Cats pitchers contributed to the victory in game one on the day, with Lauren Dvorak earning the win to improve to 6-2 in the season. Lauren Boyd opened the game and tossed 3.1 innings, followed by 2.2 innings of work from Dvorak to send the 'Cats to the seventh inning with a 9-8 lead. Williams entered relief and retired all three Buckeye batters she faced to earn her nation-leading seventh save on the season.
Williams continued to pitch into the second game on the day and never let up on the Buckeyes. The senior ace allowed just five hits and one run while striking out seven to improve to 16-2 on the season.
Northwestern returns to action this Wednesday as the Wildcats travel downstate to Champaign, Illinois for a midweek doubleheader against Illinois. Both gamesb will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network, beginning at 4 pm CT.
