Rachel Lewis Breaks NU Home Run Record in Win Over Purdue

EVANSTON, Ill. – Rachel Lewis crushed two home runs to become Northwestern's all-time career home run leader at 58 in the Wildcats' 14-2 rout of Purdue.
 
Lewis tied Tammy Williams's (2006-09) record of 57 home runs with a three-run blast in the second inning, then broke the record in her next at bat in the bottom of the fourth.
The Liberty Township, Ohio native has appeared in 221 games in her storied Wildcat career, holding a .309 batting average and 1.131 OPS. Lewis leads the 'Cats with 16 homers this year, six behind Garland Cooper's record of 23 home runs in 2007.
 
Danielle Williams got the start for Northwestern and was dominant yet again, striking out nine and allowing just two baserunners in four shutout innings. Williams holds a 17-2 record and has posted a 1.35 ERA and 205 strikeouts in 135.0 innings this season.
 
Six Wildcats tallied multi-hit games as part of a 14-hit team effort. Reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Jordyn Rudd continued her hot streak with two hits, while Hannah Cady drove in a career-high five runs on three hits. Angela Zedak, Maeve Nelson, and Skyler Shellmyer all notched two hits as well.
 
Northwestern's offensive explosion peaked with a nine-run second inning, started by a Purdue error and capped-off by Lewis's first home run.
 
The 'Cats will be back in action at Sharon J. Drysdale Field tomorrow with a 1 p.m. CT start against Purdue.
