Wildcats Fall to Penn State in Big Ten Tournament

5/6/2026 10:51:00 PM | Softball

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern fell to Penn State, 11-5, on Wednesday evening in the Big Ten Tournament.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead following home runs from Bridget Donahey and Isabel Cunnea in the first and second innings. However, the Nittany Lions responded with four home runs, all with two outs, to take the lead followed by a five-run top of the sixth inning.

Donahey's home run marked her 12th homer and 35th RBI of the season, both of which are career highs. The senior finished the game going 2-for-3 with a walk, her 13th multi-hit game of the year.

Cunnea's solo home run brought her RBI total to 24 on the year, matching her career high set in 2025.

In the leadoff spot, Grace Nieto finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Nieto's team high 49 runs this season move her into a tie for 10th in single-season program history with Mari Majam (2014) and Tammy Williams (2008). Her 41 walks are tied for second in the conference and rank ninth in program history.

Kansas Robinson finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored. It marked her 11th multi-hit effort on the season.

In the circle, Marina Mason struck out eight in 5.0 innings. Mason has recorded 8+ strikeouts in eight different outings this year, including there of her last four. Renae Cunningham tossed an inning of relief in the sixth, striking out a pair while allowing two earned runs, while Signe Dohse pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Northwestern will await the NCAA selection show on Sunday, May 10 at 6 pm CT on ESPN2, where it will look to secure one of 33 at-large bids for the NCAA Tournament.
