Evanston, IL - Tuesday's rematch of last year's Final Four semifinal matchup lived up to the hype, indulging spectators in a furious rally and an extra-time thriller between No. 6 Northwestern and No. 3 Syracuse in a packed Ryan Fieldhouse.
Graduate attacker Lauren Gilbert led all scorers with seven goals, including the game-tying and game-winning scores, while graduate midfielder Jill Girardi chipped in five in a 16-15 overtime victory for Northwestern. The win extended the Wildcats' win streak to four games and improved their record to 4-1, while the Orange dropped to 4-1.
Northwestern struck first in regulation, opening scoring on a free position from junior attacker Erin Coykendall. The 'Cats tacked on another goal just 24 seconds later from graduate midfielder Brennan Dwyer. The Syracuse offense responded by scoring three of the next four goals to pull into the lead, before four straight goals from the Wildcats — including two from graduate attacker Lauren Gilbert — gave the hosts an 8-5 advantage heading into halftime.
Momentum shifted in the Orange's favor to start the third quarter. Syracuse's offense found its rhythm in the frame, finding the net eight times to take back the lead. The 'Cats looked to Gilbert to respond on the offensive end, and she delivered with two more goals.
Northwestern's offense made a convincing surge in the final minutes, scoring on goals from Gilbert and Girardi less than a minute apart to close the deficit to 15-14 with 2:36 left in regulation. The Wildcats regained possession with two minutes left, and with 55 seconds left, Gilbert sprinted right and fired the game-tying shot into the net. Northwestern's defense foiled Syracuse's attempt at the end of regulation to force a sudden-victory overtime period.
In overtime, the 'Cats gained possession off the draw control and never gave it up. Gilbert earned a free position opportunity and converted for a Northwestern sudden victory win.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to take on the Tar Heels in their next matchup. The Cats' showdown with the Tar Heels will be held at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 6.
