'Cats Claw Past Tigers For 4-3 Win

2/4/2022 8:43:00 PM | Men's Tennis

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern sunk Princeton, 4-3, at home on Friday behind a crucial doubles point and wins from the top of the lineup.

The 'Cats improved to 6-2 and earned their second win in a row while dropping the Tigers to 1-3. Despite the early record, Princeton projects to be a contender in a strong Ivy League and received votes in the season-opening ITA poll.

Senior Simen Bratholm highlighted the evening with an impressive straight-sets win over No. 26 Karl Poling, 6-4, 6-3. Poling was the 2019 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and played at No. 1 singles with a 10-2 spring record to lead a Tigers team ranked No. 18 in the country when the season was canceled.

Senior Steven Forman continued his strong play at the pole position with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Ryan Seggerman at No. 1.

Senior Trice Pickens clinched the match for the second contest in a row with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 victory at No. 3 over Justin Barki, who was undefeated in 2019-20 with an 8-0 record.

The Wildcats claimed the doubles point with a 6-2 win from Natan Spear and Pickens at No. 3 doubles and a 6-4 win from Felix Nordby and Forman at No. 2 doubles.

The 'Cats will look to keep their momentum rolling on Sunday with a doubleheader headlined by a talented Duke team. The 'Cats face the Blue Devils at Combe at 12 p.m. CT and then UIC at 5:30 p.m. CT.
