LYNCHBURG, Va. – No. 5 Northwestern field hockey picked up its fourth ranked win of the season with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the No. 11 Liberty Flames on Tuesday afternoon.
Four different Wildcats scored goals on the day, including a stunning reverse strike from Clara Roth with just 1:37 remaining in the game. It marked the fourth goal from Roth over the course of the Wildcats' three-game road trip. Roth is now tied with Bente Baekers for the most goals on the season.
Northwestern outshot Liberty, 22-10, on the game while holding the Flames to just six shots on goal.
Liberty was able to strike first with a goal nine minutes into the game, but Alia Marshall provided a quick equalizer off a successful corner attempt assisted by Maren Seidel.
Both teams headed to halftime tied at 1-1, but Seidel quickly gave the Wildcats the lead in the third quarter off a redirect assisted by Katie Jones. However after gaining a player advantage from a green card, Liberty evened the score just before the end of the third quarter.
Captain Liese Wareham notched her second goal of the season less than five minutes into the start of the fourth quarter. It marked the second goal of the season for Wareham, who joins Roth, Baekers and Seidel as the four Wildcats with multiple goals scored on the early season.
Liberty evened the score in the fourth quarter after gaining another player advantage, but Roth came up clutch in the final minute with a snipe in transition off a beautiful entry pass from Seidel.
The No. 5-ranked Wildcats return home this weekend for a pair of Top-25 matchups at Lakeside Field. The 'Cats will host No. 23 Kent State on Friday, September 10 before taking on No. 25 Maine in a Sunday matinee. Both Friday and Sunday's games start at Noon CT, with action streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
