9/10/2021 3:56:00 PM | Field Hockey

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 5 Northwestern returned home to Lakeside Field on Friday afternoon and posted a convincing victory over yet another ranked opponent in a 6-1 victory over No. 23 Kent State.

Six different Wildcats contributed in the scoring as Northwestern outshot the Golden Flashes, 14-4. The Wildcats were extremely efficient on their corner attempts throughout the game, capitalizing with four goals in five penalty corner attempts on the afternoon.

Bente Baekers scored a goal late in the first half, marking her team-leading fifth of the season, but the offensive juggernaut Baekers was also effective distributing the ball as she registered three assists on the game. Also tallying multiple assists for the Wildcats was Kayla Blas.

Peyton Halsey wasted no time getting the 'Cats on the board early, recording her second goal of the season off a successful corner attempt.

Early in the second quarter, reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Maddie Zimmer, notched her first goal of the season off a deflected shot near the net. Minutes later, Chloe Relford extended the lead to 3-0 on her second goal of the season. Baekers would scored off a penalty corner to give Northwestern a 4-0 lead heading into the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Katie Jones resumed the scoring for the 'Cats with a solo shot from the left side of the field on a tight angle. Two minutes later, Maren Seidel scored her third goal of the season on a penalty corner assisted by Ana Medina Garcia and Alia Marshall.

Annabel Skubisz started in net for the Wildcats and recorded two saves while not allowing a goal in one half of action.

Northwestern returns to Lakeside field on Sunday afternoon for the Wildcats' seventh ranked match in as many games on the year, facing off against No. 25 Maine.
