Wildcats Split Friday Doubleheader at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Northwestern split a Friday doubleheader at Purdue behind a 3-2 win in the second half of the doubleheader.
The Wildcats were on the board first in both games. In the first game, Morgan Newport launched a three-run homer over the right field wall, scoring Skyler Shellmyer and Jordyn Rudd.
In the second game, Northwestern got a complete game from Newport on the mound. Newport allowed zero earned runs and struck out five Boilermakers while allowing only five baserunners the entire game.
Northwestern got on the board in the fourth inning sparked by a leadoff single to right field by Rachel Lewis. Following a stolen base and a groundout to the right side, Lewis moved to third. Maeve Nelson drove in Lewis with a RBI double to left field. Nelson advanced to third on a Hannah Cady single and then came around to score on an error.
With the game tied heading into the sixth, Newport sent a single up the middle to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Angela Zedak drove in pinch-runner Sammy Stanley to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.
The 'Cats will be back on the diamond tomorrow for their double header against Purdue beginning at 2:30pm CT.
