'Cats Best Illinois, 6-3, in Series Finale

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern split the weekend series with a 6-3 victory against Illinois on Sunday afternoon to remain in third place in the Big Ten standings.
After falling behind 3-0 in the top half of the inning, the 'Cats battled back. Following a leadoff double to start the bottom half of the second inning from Maeve Nelson, Hannah Cady belted a ball to left field bringing in the first Wildcat run. Two batters later, Danielle Williams lined a ball through the second baseman's legs to score Cady.
Northwestern continued their offensive barrage in the bottom half of the third inning. Rachel Lewis started things off with a single to left field followed by a Jordyn Rudd double, bringing up yesterday's hero Morgan Newport to the plate with runners at second and third. Newport lined a ball to the center field warning track, plating Lewis and advancing Rudd to third. Nelson brought Rudd in on a deep fly ball to right field, giving the Wildcats the lead. Two pitches later, Cady lined a ball over the right field wall for her first career homer. Cady's two hits and two runs scored are a new career-high.
The 'Cats got on the board again in the fifth inning on a leadoff homer down the left field line from Lewis. Lewis' homer was her seventh of the season, tying her for the team-lead with Newport.
The Wildcats ended the game on a perfectly executed double play from Nelson to Lewis to Nikki Cuchran.
Danielle Williams was dominant after giving up a home run in the first inning. She retired seven straight after the hit and nine of the next 10 batters. She finished the game with 10 strikeouts and moved to 14-4 on the season.
The Wildcats got great hitting performances throughout the weekend, especially from Lewis and Newport. Lewis finished the weekend 6-13 at the plate with a walk and 5 RBI. Newport finished the weekend with12 total bases and 6 RBI.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action at West Lafayette this Friday to kick off a four-game series vs. Purdue. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4:30 pm CT, with coverage live on the Big Ten Network.
