EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 22 Northwestern fell to Minnesota, 3-2, in 10 innings on Friday for their third loss of the season.
Senior Morgan Newport led the offense charge for the Wildcats with a two RBI double to even the score in the top of the sixth inning. She also pitched several strong relief innings, allowing no earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Danielle Williams opened the game with three strikeouts en route to 10 total in just less than six innings. A homer at the top of the third put the 'Cats down early and the Gopher's were able to grab another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
A huge double by Newport, that almost lifted over the fence, drove in Emma Bartz and Sammy Stanley to tie things up at the bottom of the sixth. Newport then threw a scoreless seventh inning to give the Wildcats a chance at a walk-off win. Mac Dunlap had a clean steal to put herself in scoring position, but 'Cats weren't able to drive her home and sent the game to extra innings.
Newport threw two more scoreless innings but so did the Gophers sending the game to a tenth inning. Starting with a runner on second, Minnesota was finally able to score and take the lead. Northwestern threw three quick outs to get back at bat, but they were unable to send anyone home.
The 'Cats will be back at Sharon J. Drysdale Field tomorrow for a double header against Minnesota starting at 10 a.m.
