
Wildcats Drop Saturday Contest to Gophers, 6-2

EVANSTON, Ill. – No. 22 Northwestern dropped the second game of its weekend series vs Minnesota, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
The Gophers jumped out to an early lead, with two runs in the top of the first inning and two more runs via a two-run homer in the second frame. The 'Cats rallied back with a two-run shot of their own in the bottom of the second off the bat of Maeve Nelson, but from there the Gophers pitching held the 'Cats scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Sydney Supple made the start for Northwestern in the circle and allowed five runs in 3.2 innings of work while striking out three. Lauren Boyd pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief and allowed just three hits and one run while striking out three of her own.
Morgan Newport turned in a multi-hit effort at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. It marks the team-leading seventh multi-hit effort of the season for Newport and extends her career-long hitting streak to 12 games.
Northwestern and Minnesota will close out the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, beginning at 11 am CT with the first game televised live on Big Ten Network.
