COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northwestern completed their season sweep of Ohio State on the road with a 21-14 victory. The Wildcats are now 10-0 on the season.
Junior Izzy Scane stuffed the stat sheet with a game-high eight goals, three assists, five draw controls and two caused turnovers. Senior Lauren Gilbert and graduate student Sammy Mueller followed, chipping in four apiece. With seven 'Cats finding the back of the net, Northwestern easily outpaced the Buckeyes with 42 shots.
The Wildcats were also aggressive in the midfield, holding Ohio State to 21 clears on 30 attempts and causing a whopping 20 turnovers. Northwestern also had success at the draw, pulling down 21 controls to just 16 from the Buckeyes.
Scane had a hand in all eight of Northwestern's goals in the first half, scoring six herself and assisting two. She came out firing with two quick goals in the first four minutes. The Buckeyes put up one goal in response before Scane fired off another two and assisted sophomore Erin Coykendall to create a 5-1 lead. Despite Scane's dominance, Ohio State managed to pull something together, using the final fifteen minutes to take a one-point lead going into halftime.
Gilbert took over in the second half, scoring two quick goals and regaining the lead for the 'Cats. This spurred a 9-0 run, starting three minutes into the second half and lasting ten minutes. The Buckeyes were forced to take a time-out, trailing 17-10 with 16 minutes left. Coming out of the break, Ohio State grabbed four more goals but were unable to overcome the advantage the Wildcats had built.
After a short road trip, the 'Cats will return home to face Michigan next Sunday. The opening draw is set for 11:30 a.m. on ESPNU.
