
This Week in Northwestern Athletics: April 14

Northwestern Athletics will have seven programs in action this week, headlined by lacrosse's pursuit of an undefeated season and field hockey set for two matchups with No. 2 Iowa.
Field Hockey
Northwestern field hockey looks to take down #2 Iowa in their two-game set on Thursday and Saturday to finish the season with double digit regular season wins for the second consecutive season and the 11th time in 12 seasons.
The Wildcats dropped two tight contests to #10 Rutgers over the weekend. Sophomore Bente Baekers scored in both games, bringing her season total to six. In Big Ten play, Baekers leads all players with 26 shots on goal and is third with five goals. Sophomore Ana Medina Garcia also added a goal in the second game against Rutgers, her third in four games and her sixth on the season. Junior Kayla Blas added an assist on Baekers' first goal in the second game, her third assist in four games.
The first game against the Hawkeyes starts at 4 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network on Thursday. Saturday's game against the Hawkeyes will also be on the Big Ten Network at noon p.m. CT.
Lacrosse
Northwestern lacrosse continued their undefeated season on Thursday with a 21-14 road win over Ohio State, earning their first comeback victory for the season sweep against the Buckeyes. Junior Izzy Scane led the Wildcats in the scoring column again, scoring eight goals while tying a team-high with three assists.
The Wildcats moved to 10-0 on the season for the first time since 2012 when they won 14 straight to start the season. Northwestern remains in the second spot in the Inside Lacrosse polls and is one of two undefeated teams with double digit wins.
The Wildcats will play Michigan on Sunday, April 18 at 11:30 a.m. CT on ESPNU as they attempt to finish the regular season undefeated. This matchup will be the first time these programs face off against each other since May 3, 2019 when the Wildcats dominated the Wolverines 19-9 in the Big Ten Tournament.
Baseball
Northwestern baseball welcomes Indiana to Rocky and Berenice Miller Park this weekend for a three-game series. The 'Cats look to improve upon their 11-10 record this weekend.
Shawn Goosenberg was the story for Northwestern last weekend against Rutgers, winning Big Ten Player of the Week after batting .533 (8-for-15) and mashing four home runs in the three-game series. Goosenberg blasted two home runs on Friday, including a walk-off bomb in the bottom of the 12th inning, to give the 'Cats one of their best wins of the season. Goosenberg is batting .356 (32-for-90) and has launched 10 home runs in 21 games this year.
Softball
Northwestern softball looks to get back on track this weekend as they travel to Iowa City to take on Iowa in a four-game series. The Wildcats are 18-6 on the season and sit only two games out of first place in the Big Ten standings.
Skyler Shellmyer led Northwestern with six hits last weekend against Minnesota, while Jordyn Rudd went 3-for-4 with a home run in Sunday's contest. Danielle Williams was spectacular once again in the series, posting a 1.57 ERA in 13.1 IP and collecting 17 strikeouts.
First pitch for the series is set for 3 p.m. CT on Friday. Saturday's first game will be televised on ESPNU at 3 p.m. CT.
Women's Tennis
No. 7 Northwestern tennis wraps up its regular season this weekend with a trip to Urbana-Champaign to take on Illinois on Sunday at noon. The Wildcats are 17-3 on the season and are tied for second in the Big Ten standings.
The 'Cats went 1-1 over the past weekend, defeating Indiana on Friday, 6-1, and falling in a tight matchup to No. 20 Michigan, 3-4. Clarissa Hand and Christina Hand won both their matchups this weekend.
17-3 is the Wildcats' best record through 20 games since the 2008-09 season. This season will also be the 'Cats highest regular season winning percentage since 2008-09.
Women's Golf
Northwestern women's golf travels to Bloomington, Indiana this weekend for the Indiana Invitational.
The Wildcats are coming off a ninth place finish at the Silverado Showdown at the Silverado Resort and Spa. #16 Irene Kim finished in the top-25 for the fifth consecutive time, followed by Kelly Sim who was only one stroke behind Kim. First-year Jennifer Cai notched her best finish in her Northwestern career, finishing tied for 31st along with fellow Wildcat Brooke Riley.
Men's Tennis
The Wildcats look to extend their four-game win streak, their longest streak in conference play since Apr. 2 - 14, 2017 when they also won four consecutive, in the last regular season game of the year, as they host Illinois at the Combe Family Tennis Center on Sunday at noon.
The 'Cats went 2-0 on the weekend, taking down Nebraska and Iowa on the road.
Against Nebraska, the Wildcats took the doubles point before Steven Forman, Chris Ephron and Gleb Blekher picked up singles wins.
After securing wins at all three doubles positions to take the first point of the match against Iowa, NU went on to take wins in five of the six singles matches including three-set wins from Steve Forman and Dominik Stary at No. 1 and 2, respectively.
Field Hockey
