EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern completed a four-game sweep of Wisconsin with a 6-5 win on Sunday at Sharon J. Drysdale Field.
The Wildcats improved to 15-1 on the season and won their sixth game in a row. They maintained their first-place perch atop the Big Ten standings with Illinois in second place at 10-2.
A balanced offensive effort including a three-run fifth inning put the Wildcats on top. Sydney Supple led the way with a team-high three RBI on two hits, a two-run double and a solo home run.
Danielle Williams two-way contributions were crucial yet again, as she improved to 8-0 on the season with a complete game while adding two RBI on two hits and a walk. Williams struck out eight and allowed just six hits in seven innings.
Angela Zedak and Nikki Cuchran also had multiple hits on the day while Cuchran also registered an RBI.
Northwestern opened the scoring in the second inning thanks to no-out singles from Zedak and Cuchran. Zedak advanced to third on Cuchran's single and then Mac Dunlap pinch ran on first and stole second. Supple brought in Zedak and Dunlap with a double to left center to make it 2-0.
Wisconsin tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth but Supple continued her magnificent weekend at the plate with a one-out solo home run to make it 3-2. The sophomore finished the weekend with eight RBI in 10 at-bats.
The Wildcats tacked on three more in the fifth, starting with the dangerous combination of Zedak and Cuchran, hitting back-to-back singles, with Cuchran's scoring Zedak from second after a wild pitch. Fearing Supple's power that had been on display all weekend, the Badgers intentionally walked her to get to Williams. The junior from California made them pay with a two-RBI triple to left center to make it 6-2.
Williams and the Wildcats survived the top of the seventh despite a Badger home run to hold on to the win.
Northwestern's Big Ten Campaign continues next week with a four game set at Maryland starting on Friday with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch on Friday is set for 4 p.m. CT.
