COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Northwestern opened a four-game weeekend series at Maryland with a decisive 9-0 run-rule victory in six inning over the Terrapins behind a three-hit shutout from Danielle Williams.
Williams improves to 9-0 on the season after tossing her fourth shutout of the season while striking out eight batters. Her nine wins on the year lead all Big Ten pitchers.
The Wildcats wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, plating four runs in the top of the second inning. After scoring the first two via an error and a sacrifice fly, Rachel Lewis kept the rally going with a one-out single to left field to drive in Sydney Supple. During the next at-bat, Skyler Shellmyer added a fourth run with some crafty base running as Lewis added her 16th stolen base of the season.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning after Angela Zedak came through with a two-out double to right field to drive in Jordyn Rudd and Maeve Nelson.
In the top of the sixth inning, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week Morgan Newport continued her red hot performance at the plate with a three-run home run to extend the NU lead to 9-0, marking Newport's team-leading fourth homer of the season.
The Wildcats improve to 16-1 on the season and remain alone atop the Big Ten standings. Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 1 pm CT on Big Ten Network+.
