Northwestern Drops Double OT Battle to Hoosiers

2/10/2021 7:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball

EVANSTON, Ill -- Northwestern fell short in a double-overtime thriller Wednesday evening by a score of 79-76.

Four Wildcats finished in double figures in the contest. Chase Audige led the way for the 'Cats with 19 points, four assists, and four steals. Pete Nance, Robbie Beran, and Ryan Young all joined the sophomore with 10+ points each.

The Northwestern defense was staunch in the first half. The 'Cats held the Hoosiers without a point for the first 5:30 of the game. NU held Indiana to just 20 first-half points, the fewest Northwestern has allowed to a Big Ten opponent since allowing 17 to Ohio State on March 6, 2019.

Chase Audige and Ryan Young led the Wildcats in the half with seven points each. Pete Nance was active on the boards, corralling five rebounds in the first stanza.

The Wildcats led 23-20 at the break after a last second hook shot from Trayce Jackson-Davis.

In the second half, Robbie Beran took charge with 11 points on a perfect 3-of-3 from deep. The 'Cats shot 45.5% from downtown in the half.

Chase Audige turned in a valiant defensive effort in the second half. The sophomore transfer from William & Mary collected two blocks and four steals on the night.

The 'Cats led by seven with 2:16 to play, but with a 7-0 run, the Hoosiers were able to push the game to overtime. Northwestern had a chance to win it with 2.9 seconds left, but Pete Nance and Chase Audige were unable to connect on the lob pass.

In the first overtime, it was all Nance and Audige. The duo combined for all of Northwestern's 12 overtime points. The 'Cats led by six with 1:05 to play in the extra period. The Hossiers once again found a way to crawl back, and with a deep two from Aljami Durham, IU knotted the game at 66 with 1.4 seconds to play.

In the second overtime, Northwestern struck first with a layup from Ryan Young, but it was the free throw shooting from the Hoosiers that sealed the game.

This marked NU's first double-overtime game since March 3, 2015 when they topped the Michigan Wolverines.

Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action against No. 25 Rutgers in Piscataway, New Jersey on Saturday at 4 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.
