PISCATAWAY, NJ – Northwestern could not capitalize on a staunch defensive effort as the 'Cats dropped a Saturday afternoon matchup vs. #25 Rutgers, 64-50, at The RAC.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead powered by a balanced offensive effort from their starting five. NU went on a 10-0 run while holding the Scarlet Knights scoreless for over 4:30 following their first offensive possession.
Anthony Gaines led the Wildcats' offensive throughout the first half, eclipsing his season high in the first 20 minutes of action as he posted 11 points while knocking down a pair of three-pointers. The redshirt junior also finished the night with six rebounds.
Chase Audige also finished with 11 points to go along with four rebounds two assists and two steals, marking the seventh game this season Audige has recorded multiple steals. The redshirt sophomore has now scored in double figures in four-consecutive games, tied for his longest stretch scoring in double figures since he opened the season with four-straight games.
Rutgers extended the lead to double digits entering the half, however the Wildcats fought back and mounted an 11-0 run in the middle of the second half to cut the deficit to as little as three. During that second half run, Northwestern held Rutgers scoreless over a 7:58 stretch.
This marks the second time this season the Wildcats held Rutgers to exactly 64 points. The 'Cats are one of just three teams this season to hold the Scarlet Knights below 65 points. Also noteworthy on the defensive end was Northwestern's shot-blocking prowess, as the Wildcats finished with seven blocks for the second-consecutive game for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
Leading the shot blocking charge was Pete Nance, who finished with two blocks as well as eight points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Nance has now recorded at least seven rebounds in seven consecutive games, extending what was already the longest streak of his career.
Northwestern travels down state to Champaign, Illinois for its next matchup to face the Illinois Fighting Illini on Tuesday night in what will be the second-straight ranked road matchup for the 'Cats. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 pm CT, with coverage live on Big Ten Network and WGN Radio.
