ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Northwestern dropped the inaugural George Jewett Trophy matchup to No. 6 Michigan 33-7 at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. The 'Cats fell to 3-4 on the season.
The Wildcats became the second team to hold Michigan scoreless in the first quarter this season and went into halftime facing only a three-point deficit, but were unable to close the gap in the second half.
It was a career-day for sophomore DB Coco Azema, who registered a career-high 13 tackles and forced the first two fumbles of his career. He is the third NU defender and first defensive back since 2000 to tally 10+ tackles and two forced fumbles in a single game, joining Anthony Walker (2015) and Paddy Fisher (2017). Northwestern's two fumble recoveries matched Michigan's previous season turnover total of two.
Evan Hull exploded for a 75-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, the longest play surrendered by Michigan's defense this season. Hull became the fourth player in the FBS this season with two rushes of 75+ yards, including his 90-yard touchdown rush against Ohio earlier this year. Hull is the first Northwestern player with two 70+ yard rushes in a season since Venric Mark did so in 2012.
Chris Bergin, Coco Azema, Brandon Joseph, and Bryce Gallagher all tallied double-digit tackles, the second time this season that four NU players have recorded 10+ tackles. All four players set new career-highs in total tackles against the Wolverines.
Joseph also recorded his first-career sack in the first quarter, only the third sack Michigan has allowed this season.
The 'Cats look to get back on track next weekend as they welcome Minnesota to Ryan Field. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. CT and will be televised on Big Ten Network.
