MADISON, Wisc. – Northwestern is back in action on Wednesday night as the Wildcats will meet up with their second Top-10 opponent in a row for a showdown against the #10 Wisconsin Badgers.
The last time NU played two Top-10 opponents in a row was during the 2006-07 season against a #3 Wisconsin team led by Aland Tucker and Kammron Taylor on Jan. 13, 2007, followed by a trip to #7 Ohio State, the eventual national runners up led by Greg Oden and Mike Conley.
In their last time out, the Wildcats fell to #5 Iowa, 96-73, on Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes shot a blistering 57.9% from the field, however Northwestern held Iowa center Luka Garza to 17 points, the second time Northwestern has held him to below 20 points this season. Since January 7, 2020 no other Big Ten school has held Garza under 20 points even once.
In their lone meeting with the Badgers last season, the 'Cats traveled to the Kohl Center for their final road game of the 2019-20 campaign in a 63-48 setback on March 4, 2020. Pete Nance led all scorers that game with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Tip-off for Wednesday's matchup will be at 7 pm CT (note, a change from the originally announced 8 pm CT start), with action live on Big Ten Network and WGN 720 AM.
Storylines
- The Wildcats' game on Wednesday will mark the end of a program-record seven-straight games against ranked opponents. Prior to this year, NU had faced a ranked team in four-straight matchups four times in program history (also in 1983/84, 1989/90, 1987/88 and 2015-16).
- Northwestern currently leads the nation in strength of schedule. According to KenPom, no team in the country has faced a more difficult offensive slate at this point in the season than Northwestern.
- NU's last two meetings with Wisconsin have been against ranked Badger teams (#24 in 2020, #22 in 2019). Northwestern's last win over a ranked Wisconsin team was on Feb. 12, 2017, when the Wildcats took down the 7th- ranked Badgers, 66-59, at the Kohl Center to snap the Badgers' 19-game home winning streak.
- Ryan Greer posted career highs with 10 points and three three-pointers in 17 min of action during the 'Cats' last game vs. #5 Iowa. Greer's three triples were the most by a Wildcat in less than 18 minutes played since Ryan Taylor also hit three in 17 min. against Illinois on March 3, 2019.
- Sullivan-Ubben Head Men's Basketball Coach Chris Collins is 3-3 all-time at the Kohl Center. Since Collins took over at NU (2013-14), he has the
most wins at the Kohl Center for an opposing coach, with two of those three wins coming against Wisconsin teams ranked in the Top-15. With a win on Wednesday and NU will be the lone Big Ten team to beat Wisconsin three times at the Kohl Center during the Greg Gard era.
