EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern will compete in its final regular season tournament this weekend at the Red and Black Challenge hosted by the University of Louisville.
The Wildcats will play four games over the course of the three-day tournament, including a pair of matchups against Oakland and as well as solo faceoffs against Evansville and the host, Louisville.
The 'Cats have never before faced Oakland or Evansville, but have plenty of recent history against Louisville. NU went 4-1 against the Cardinals in 2019 and beat them twice in a row to win the Evanston Regional and advance to the Norman Super Regional.
The #B1GCats are looking to continue their momentum following a strong 3-2 showing at the Courtyard Marriot Tournament last weekend. They defeated North Texas and Abilene Christian twice, while their only setbacks came to #5 Oklahoma.
Senior Morgan Newport is enjoying a breakout offensive campaign for the Wildcats. She currently leads the team in average (.289) and on-base percentage (.441) and walks (11), and holds career highs in average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage (.511). Newport is also fifth in the Big Ten in walks per game (0.61). Newport hit .500 (4-for-8) with two walks in Oklahoma last weekend.
Junior Rachel Lewis leads the Wildcats in several offensive categories, including hits (16), doubles (6), slugging percentage (.593), runs (19), OPS (1.018), and total bases (35). Lewis is also second in the Big Ten in runs and runs per game (1.00).
Sophomore shortstop Maeve Nelson is putting together a powerful offensive campaign. The River Forest, Ill. native is second in the Big Ten with six home runs and ranks seventh among Big Ten infielders with a .589 slugging percentage (min. 45 plate appearances). Nelson added to her team-leading home run total last weekend, when she blasted three home runs in a double-header against Abilene Christian.
First-year Angela Zedak had a weekend to remember in Oklahoma last week, launching her first two career home runs while collecting four hits and four RBI in 10 at bats. Zedak currently ranks sixth among Big Ten first-years in OPS (.908).
Both games against Louisville will be streamed live on the ACC Network. Fans can follow the action of all five games, as well as the Wildcats' entire season, on Twitter at @NUSBCats.
