'Cats Open Weekend With 5-1 Victory Over Oakland

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Northwestern began its weekend at the Red & Black Challenge hosted by the University of Louisville with a 5-1 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies.
The Wildcats scored two runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 3-1 advantage and never looked back from then on.
Kaley Winegarner pitched a gem for the 'Cats, allowing no earned runs and just four hits in five innings of work. Jordyn Rudd also smacked a two-run shot over the right field wall in the top of the sixth.
Oakland struck first in the bottom of the first, but the 'Cats answered with a run of their own in the top of the second thanks to a sac fly from Sydney Supple to knot the game up at 1-1.
From then on, it was all Northwestern. In the fourth, Nikki Cuchran knocked in two runs, plating Maeve Nelson and Skyler Shellmeyer with two outs to put the Wildcats up 3-1.
In the top of the sixth, Jordyn Rudd bust the game open with a two-run opposite field homer to right field, her third of the year. Rudd has racked up 5 RBI in the last three games.
Danielle Williams tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the circle, allowing just one hit while striking out four to ice the game for the 'Cats.
Winegarner improves to a perfect 4-0 in her fifth-year campaign while lowering her ERA to a team-best 1.62 mark (7 ER/30.1 IP).
Northwestern will continue the weekend in Louisville tomorrow with a doubleheader. The Wildcats will play Louisville at 11:15 a.m. CT and Evansville at 3:45 p.m. CT.
